I am looking for anyone who
would know of anyone attached to
the Cross family,
originally around Allen County.
Solomon Cross left
Emmaline (Miller) and moved
on to Van Buren County Iowa,
then married Sarah Confer
there. He left behind his former
wife Emmaline (Miller) Cross,
maybe 3 daughters Eliza,
Lora, and Lavina.
Lavina might have married a man
named Findley. A brother
from Solomon’s and Sarah's
marriage moved to Muncie and
lived there and worked for the
Ball glassworks for a while and
then moved back to Van Buren
County Iowa. When ever
Williard would move like
this it would almost always be
where family was located.
So would anyone know where these
4 women might be
located?
Thank you,
Richard Harness

Dear
DCHS Researchers:
I am currently doing some
family history research on my
3rd Great Grandmother,
Elizabeth (PERAGEN)
FRIEND, who had came to
Delaware County approximately
1827 with her two youngest
daughters, Harriet and
Electa Ann FRIEND. Also,
her son Nicholas FRIEND
with is first wife, Mary
(HAINES) and baby, Harvey
FRIEND. In my recent
research, I have learned that
Elizabeth had been the second
woman to purchase two 80-acres
parcels in Delaware Township on
29 September 1831 and 30
November 1831 from the 24 April
1820 Cash-Sale Public Land Act,
which the Federal grant
certificate that was issued on
16 March 1832. A few month
thereafter, Elizabeth was then
being indicted for adultery and
fornication, along with a friend
of the family, Andrew BOGGS,
whom she married in 1836.
However, after many repeated
court appearances over the
course of two years. The judge
dismissed this case on ground of
no evidence related to the
charges mentioned. But she did
moved to Blackford County or at
least she bought additional land
in 1833 in Blackford County
while yet still making court
appearances. Her son Nicholas
was held by a bond of the State
of Indiana - Delware County to
assure that his mother made her
court appearances.
Nevertheless, she did sale her
160-acres to an Abraham
Custer in 1835. What I
would like is for any additional
evidence of primary source
documents that may have tied my
3rd Great Grandmother into the
early American history of the
women's rights movement. I
would like to see if there were
any other women of this county
who may have left some diaries,
letters, and/or other indication
of their life as a woman in the
early Indiana history. Also, if
there were any early magazines,
newspapers, other other medium
that could have sought any
reason of the early women's
rights movement. Your help
would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

I purchased the butcher rack shown in the picture below back in Nov. 1999. The prior owner lived in Muncie for 45 years and said she purchased it at an auction of a butcher shop contents sometime in the late 1940's or early 50's. She said she thought it was on Main St. She had remembered it, prior to the sale, in the window with sausage hanging from it.
I'm trying to develop some history on it and would like to know the name of the shop, how long it was in business, owner's etc.
I would like to know if any "old timers" that may still be around remember this piece and the earliest they may have recollection seeing it in the window. I'm trying to determine it's age as close as possible.

Hello, I am trying to find information on the oil wells around Desoto, specifically the wells that used to be in the area bordered by Clifton Rd on the south, 450 E on the west and Shindel on the east. Most of the wells were powered by the old Central Power source and date from 1906. They were run by Unity Oil and Gas, but Unity did not acquire the wells until April, 1920. Before that , I believe Robert E Gregg Oil and Gas may have ran the wells. The leases were held by someone named Coons.
The industrial history and simple mechanics of these old well systems fascinates me. If you have any information, especially photos, I would appreciate it.

I am a
graduate student and I am
currently researching popular
entertainment in nineteenth
century Indiana. I
recently came across the
traveling medicine show called "Dr.
Bartone's One Deal Comedy
Company" which supposedly
wintered in nearby Albany.
Does anyone have any records on
this topic or know of any
personal papers or newspaper
clippings/records of the show?
If so please contact me.

In the
Carmichael (Blowers) Cemetery in
Muncie, Indiana there is the
grave of William H.
Mansfield, it says that
he died on March 21, 1869 aged
46 yrs. 11 mo. and 26 days.
I was wondering if anyone
out there might be able to tell
me if William H. Mansfield was
married to Deborah Ann
Dangler, if this is him they
were married on September 21,
1854 in Darke County, Ohio. They
had 2 sons that I know of
Samuel W. Mansfield born:
April 15, 1855 in Ohio, and
John W. Mansfield Born: 1862
in Ohio, there also may have
been a third child born to this
marriage.
I just am looking for
some confirmation on any of this
information!
Thank you,

I am
trying to determine how
my great grandfather's
brother, Isaac Hughes
died. Isaac was born
Jan 19, 1845 in Bucks
County, PA. The family
moved to Indiana
(Delaware County) where
Isaac and my great
grandfather Matthew
Hughes joined the
Union Army. Isaac was
with the 19th Indiana
Infantry, Co E. He was
a Blackhat. On July 1,
1863 he was wounded at
Gettysburg. He was
apparently picked up by
the Confederates and his
right arm was amputated
on July 3. By September
18, 1863, Isaac was
released to go home. We
know that he applied for
a pension and was
granted one--$8/month.
Isaac is buried beside
his mother, Rachel, in
Beech Grove Cemetery.
We are not sure how or
when he died. Great
grandfather Matthew had
his death as August 13,
1864. Any information
on what happened to
Isaac between is release
from the army to his
death, much appreciated.

Seeking very basic
info about the "Lake Delaware
Resort" on Cornbread Rd next
to the RR in Yorktown --
when built, by whom, when
closed, eventual fate of
building. I have an old
clipping from the Star (undated)
stating that the lake was formed
by a dam that was flooded out in
the 1890s. It states that the
Big Four RR operated
excursions, and that many spent
entire summers at the resort.
(Hard to believe... Yorktown was
a tourist trap.)

Interested in knowing
the precise year Oliver H Smith
platted Yorktown
-- I know that he donated a
lot to the Methodist Society
in 1846. (Incidentally,
the lot was never claimed by the
church, and a Nancy Campbell
was granted a deed in 1923
based on 20 years' occupancy.)
Also, as a child I was told that
Smith, a US Senator,
profited from inside information
about the future route of the
railroad when he bought up the
land that became Yorktown.
Can that be backed up by a
reliable source?

My name is Lori
Godlove-Frazier. I have
been doing research on
the
Godlove
family from
Muncie, IN for a few
years now. Although I
have found out quite a
bit on the Godlove
Cemetery, and that
Joseph Godlove had
taught school in his
kitchen. Virginia Fyfe
had taken photos of the
farm for me. Has
anyone tried to preserve
this home or showed any
interest? I am assuming
from the pictures it is
abandoned.
Also, I have attached a photo of 2
gentleman which I assume
to be part of the
Godlove family. Can you
help me on how I can
identify them.

Thank you,
Lori Godlove-Frazier
